How to Clean Your Child’s New Ear Piercings
Morning+ Evening
Clean twice per day.
Clean the piercings twice per day — once in the morning and once in the evening — using Tribal Expression’s recommended hypochlorous-acid aftercare protocol. Aim for the cleanings to be reasonably spaced through the day, approximately 12 hours apart where practical. Do not treat this as an exact timer — morning and evening is the important concept.
THE FIRST CLEANING: THE NIGHT OF THE PIERCING, BEFORE BED
After leaving the studio: leave the jewellery largely alone — do not spin it, do not pull it, do not repeatedly inspect it, do not deliberately move it back and forth.
If the child showers that evening: shower first, clean the piercings afterward. This helps remove shampoo, conditioner, soap, face wash or other products that may have contacted the area.
THE OPTIONAL FOURTH, DRY SWAB
In specific situations Tribal Expression may recommend a fourth completely clean, dry cotton swab after the three wet swabs — useful when moisture remains around the piercing or when the routine is being reviewed for certain irritation or dryness concerns. It is for gently absorbing residual moisture — not scraping, scrubbing, digging or rotating jewellery. It is not automatically required for every child.
The Tribal Expression Three-Swab Cleaning Method
Follow the steps one ear at a time, in order, every morning and evening.
Ear #1Three completely new swabs.
WASH YOUR HANDS
Wash hands thoroughly before touching the piercing or jewellery.
GET THREE CLEAN COTTON SWABS
Use THREE completely new cotton swabs for the first ear.
SATURATE ALL THREE
Thoroughly saturate all three cotton swabs with the recommended hypochlorous-acid aftercare solution. Thoroughly saturated — the swab should be clearly wet, not damp.
SWAB #1
Using the first saturated cotton swab, gently clean underneath and around the decorative front or bead, then gently clean underneath and around the flat-back disc. Do NOT push the jewellery through, pull it forward, rotate it or spin it. Discard the swab.
SWAB #2
Use the second saturated cotton swab. Again clean FRONT → BACK. Gently remove healing debris that has softened. Discard it.
SWAB #3
Use the third saturated cotton swab. Again clean FRONT → BACK. Remove remaining softened debris gently — do not aggressively scrub. Discard it.
EAR #1 IS FINISHED
Never reuse any of these swabs on the second ear.
STOP — WASH YOUR HANDS AGAIN
This step is critical. Do not simply move directly from Ear #1 to Ear #2 with the same hands — wash hands again. If soap and water genuinely are unavailable and suitable hand sanitizer is being used: hands must not be visibly dirty, use an appropriate sanitizer, and allow hands to dry before touching Ear #2. NO CROSS-CONTAMINATION BETWEEN EARS.
Ear #2Repeat the same process.
THREE BRAND-NEW SWABS FOR EAR #2
Take THREE completely new cotton swabs. Saturate them. Repeat the entire process for the second ear.
FRONT OF EAR
The decorative jewellery front — clean underneath and around it.
Clean front → back
BACK OF EAR
The flat-back disc — clean underneath and around it.
Never do these
PUSH THE JEWELLERY THROUGH
PULL IT FORWARD
ROTATE OR SPIN IT
Ear #1
3 NEW SWABS
WASH YOUR HANDS AGAINEar #2
3 COMPLETELY NEW SWABS
USED SWAB → SECOND EAR
NO.
A swab that touched one ear never touches the other.
- Never use a swab from one ear on the other ear.
- Never reuse a dirty swab.
- Wash hands again before moving from one healing ear to the other.
- If one piercing has become irritated or contaminated, moving used materials or contaminated hands directly to the other piercing can transfer microorganisms and increase risk.
NO TWISTING. NO SPINNING. NO FIDDLING.
There is no requirement to deliberately rotate or spin healing piercing jewellery, and no need to deliberately slide the post backwards and forwards. The small amount of natural movement involved in gently cleaning around the front and back is enough.
For kids: “You don’t need to spin your new earrings.”
The rule kids remember
CLEAN HANDS.
CLEAN GENTLY.
THEN HANDS OFF.

Chapter 2 · What is normal?
What Normal Healing Looks Like
Healing is a process
- 1
Piercing day
The piercing is done and structured aftercare begins — the first routine cleaning happens the night of the piercing, before bed.
Read more - 2
Early healing
In Keith’s experience, procedure-related tenderness often begins settling substantially over the first couple of days — experience, not a guarantee.
Read more - 3
Structured aftercare
Approximately the first six weeks for an uncomplicated earlobe piercing under Tribal’s normal protocol — twice-daily cleaning, contamination precautions, snag prevention, pressure precautions and lifestyle precautions. Individual healing varies.
Read more - 4
Jewellery fit / downsizing assessment
Initial posts contain additional room for swelling. Once swelling decreases, Tribal commonly reassesses fit for downsizing around approximately six to eight weeks depending on actual healing.
Read more - 5
Longer-term maturation
At around six weeks the piercing may feel substantially better — but the new tissue is still relatively young and fragile, and should not be described as automatically fully mature. Keith’s broader maturation view is approximately six months to one year for substantially greater maturation. Individual healing varies.

1 · FEELS HEALED
At around six weeks the piercing may feel substantially better — feeling better is not the same as being finished.
2 · READY FOR AN APPROPRIATE JEWELLERY CHANGE
Assessed for the individual piercing — a piercing may be ready for an exchange without being ready to remain empty.
3 · READY TO LEAVE JEWELLERY OUT
The last milestone — substantially greater maturation can take approximately six months to one year. Individual healing varies.
Feeling healed, being ready to change jewellery, and being ready to leave jewellery out are three different things.
COMMONLY SEEN DURING HEALING
- Mild redness
- Mild inflammation
- Tenderness
- Small blood spotting
- Dried blood
- Pale, whitish or light-yellow healing secretion
- Dried crusties
In Keith’s experience, procedure-related tenderness often begins settling substantially over the first couple of days — this is experience, not a guarantee. Healing debris can continue for several weeks. Read the full normal-healing guide.
WATCH THE PATTERN
LOOK AT THE PATTERN,
NOT ONE SYMPTOM.
A little redness alone does not automatically equal infection. Crusties alone do not automatically equal infection. Pay more attention when the overall direction changes from BETTER → WORSE.
SOMETHING CHANGING?
Worsening redness, spreading swelling, feeling unwell, or discharge that keeps getting worse is not “normal healing.”
SEE THE THREE CLEAR PATHWAYSWHAT ARE THE CRUSTIES?
NORMAL HEALING DEBRIS
DON’T PICK · DON’T SCRAPE
Dried healing material can be normal. Normal secretions may dry around the front or back of the jewellery, and a small amount of dried blood can also occur early in healing. A crusty does not automatically mean infection, pus, keloid or biofilm. The goal is regular gentle cleaning — not aggressive removal. Read more.
For kids: “If a crusty doesn’t want to come off, we make it soft first. We don’t pick at it.”
STUBBORN CRUSTIES — THE SHORT VERSION
SOFTENSpray HOCl around the front and the back, then let it sit approximately 1–2 minutes.
WAITWhere practical, clean after bathing or showering so dried material has already begun softening.
GENTLY CLEANUse a thoroughly saturated clean cotton swab and gently remove the softened debris.
IF IT DOESN’T RELEASE, DON’T FORCE ITIf a small amount remains firmly attached, do not turn cleaning into aggressive scraping.
The exact canonical procedure
- Do not pick with fingernails.
- Do not use tweezers.
- Do not use a needle.
- Do not scrape.
- Do not twist the jewellery to reach the debris.
- Where practical, clean after bathing or showering so dried material has already begun softening.
- Spray HOCl around the front.
- Spray HOCl around the back.
- Let it sit approximately 1–2 minutes.
- Use a thoroughly saturated clean cotton swab.
- Gently remove softened debris.
- If a small amount remains firmly attached, do not turn cleaning into aggressive scraping.
CAN I CLEAN IT TOO MUCH?
More cleaning ≠ better cleaning.
Yes — over-cleaning can be as harmful as under-cleaning. The standard routine is TWICE DAILY — not 4, 5, 6 or more routine cleanings every day. Possible over-cleaning irritation patterns: increasing redness, very bright or shiny redness, dryness, flaking, tenderness, and increasing irritation around cleaning.
Keith Tip: Keith conversationally describes some over-irritated ears as looking “cherry tomato red” — a practical visual description, not a medical diagnosis.
If cleaning seems to make the ear progressively angrier, do not respond by cleaning it more and more — contact Tribal Expression. Read the full over-cleaning guide.
WE FORGOT ONE CLEANING. NOW WHAT?
Missing one cleaning does not ruin the piercing. Do not panic, do not aggressively scrub, and do not do several back-to-back cleanings. Simply resume the regular routine.
CONSISTENCY, NOT PUNISHMENT.
Worsening redness, spreading swelling, feeling unwell, or discharge that keeps getting worse is not “normal healing” — see the three clear pathways, and get appropriate medical care when indicated. A web page never replaces professional assessment.
Chapter 3 · Everyday life
Everyday Life While Ears Heal
SHOWERING
Shower normally — clean the piercings after, so the routine removes any leftover shampoo, soap or product.

Baths are fine — pay particular attention to bathtub cleanliness, and rinse cleaning chemicals away before bathing.
Read the full guideCOSMETICS, SUNSCREEN & HAIR PRODUCTS
Keep products off the piercing where practical, and clean afterward when they may have contacted the area.

Hair, brushes and towels are major snag opportunities — tie long or fine hair back, and never vigorously rub a towel around the jewellery.

The no-twisting, no-fiddling rule travels to school with your child — keep a grown-up in the loop for sports and swimming days.

Fit is the determining factor — if a cup presses on the front, post, flat back or surrounding piercing, use another style during the initial approximately six-week period.
ALCOHOL MAY BE USED ON A COMPATIBLE DEVICE. TRIBAL DOES NOT RECOMMEND RUBBING ALCOHOL ON THE FRESH PIERCING.
Read the full guideSLEEPING
Give the ear its own sleeping space — the two-pillow method is diagrammed below.
Read the full guideGive the Ear Its Own Sleeping Space — the two-pillow method
ROOM FOR THE EAR
LESS DIRECT PRESSURE
SPACE REMAINS AS THE CHILD SHIFTS
- 1Put two normal pillows side by side.
- 2Leave approximately a one-inch gap between them.
- 3Position the child so the ear rests naturally in the gap while sleeping on their side.
- 4This creates space for the ear rather than pressing it directly into the pillow.
- 5Because the gap extends between the pillows, it can continue providing space as a child shifts during sleep.
Travel pillows and specialty piercing pillows may also work. Keith has found some active sleepers move away from smaller pillows, which is why the two-pillow method can be useful. This is a practical method, not a claim of medical superiority for everybody. Read the full sleeping guide.
For kids: “We’re giving your ear its own little sleeping space.”
HEADPHONES — GOOD FIT
A headphone or headset that does not contact or press on the piercing. If the current style presses against the decorative front, post, flat back or surrounding piercing, use another style during the initial approximately six-week structured aftercare period. Keep devices clean.
HEADPHONES — NOT GOOD
An ear cup pressing directly against the front or back of a healing piercing.
Every everyday-life subject also has its own reviewed article in the aftercare library.
Chapter 4 · Sports, swimming & activities
Sports, Swimming & Activities
First, find out which situation applies to your child’s sport:
THE SPORT ALLOWS SECURELY COVERED JEWELLERY
Use the exact bandage method below, and remove the bandages after the activity. See the bandage method
THE SPORT REQUIRES JEWELLERY REMOVAL
Check league rules, school rules, governing-body rules, coach guidance and referee requirements. Some sports allow covered jewellery; others require complete removal even if taped or bandaged. Do not conceal earrings from officials, and do not repeatedly remove and reinsert fresh piercing jewellery for practices and games. Where mandatory removal will repeatedly occur, consider delaying the piercing until an appropriate off-season. Read more
HELMETS & SPORTS EQUIPMENT
Watch for pressure, rubbing, snagging, sweat, difficult-to-clean padding and contamination. We will never tell a child not to use required safety equipment — instead, plan piercing timing. Keith’s professional example: for a child playing frequent hockey during winter, piercing during the off-season may create a much easier initial healing period than piercing in the middle of hockey season. Read more
HELMET FIT
Good: appropriate fit without pressure on the piercing, where achievable.
Watch: pressure, rubbing or snag potential near the jewellery.
If the sport or activity permits securely covered jewellery:
Front of ear
Soft padded centre over the jewellery front. Adhesive on surrounding intact skin only.
Back of ear
Second bandage if needed — padded centre over the flat back. Adhesive on surrounding intact skin only.
NO ADHESIVE ON THE PIERCING OR THE JEWELLERY.
This is temporary contact protection — it is not a reason to continuously leave bandages over healing piercings.
The numbered process
- 1Wash hands.
- 2Use a CLEAN adhesive bandage.
- 3Position the SOFT PADDED CENTRE over the FRONT of the jewellery.
- 4Adhesive touches surrounding intact skin only.
- 5Adhesive must NOT stick to the jewellery or piercing opening.
- 6If the back needs protection, use a SECOND bandage.
- 7Again place the padded centre over the flat back.
- 8Adhesive touches surrounding intact skin only.
- 9Remove these after the activity.
Swimming
Think about swimming before the piercing: vacations, swimming lessons, pools, water parks, hot tubs, lakes, rivers, oceans, camps, boating and water sports. If a major swimming vacation is about to begin, Tribal may discuss whether waiting to pierce makes more sense. During initial healing, we recommend avoiding intentionally submerging new piercings in pools, hot tubs, lakes, rivers or oceans — where practical, keep the ears and head out of the water. We do not treat any fixed number of weeks as making swimming automatically safe.
DID THE PIERCING GO UNDER WATER?
NO
Continue regular aftercare — nothing about the routine changes.
YES
Clean the piercing promptly after leaving the water — Keith’s practical target is approximately within 30 minutes where practical. This does not guarantee infection prevention.
DOES THIS AUTOMATICALLY BECOME A THIRD DAILY CLEANING? — NO.
One swimming day, mapped
8:00 AM
Normal morning cleaning
6:00 PM
Swimming
6:30 PM
Clean after swimming
Bedtime
No additional routine cleaning
Next morning
Resume the normal routine
The post-swimming cleaning normally REPLACES the next scheduled routine cleaning. It does not automatically become a third cleaning.
Chapter 5 · Something happened
Something Happened — Here’s Exactly What to Do
Stay calm. Almost everything on this page has a clear first step. If you are ever unsure, you can send Tribal Expression a private piercing concern — you don’t have to figure it out alone.
SNAGGED EARRING
DO THIS FIRST: Wash hands, then inspect the ear and the jewellery before touching anything else.
Check for obvious tissue damage, whether the jewellery moved or loosened, and that the front remains seated. Return to the gentle cleaning routine.

DO THIS FIRST: Do not force anything and do not dig at the tissue.
A post that looks too short, or jewellery that appears to be sinking in, needs assessment — Tribal may install an appropriately longer post when the situation remains within professional piercing scope.
Read the embedding guideWhat if the ear gets hit?
WASH HANDS
CHECK THE EAR + JEWELLERY
Inspect the ear, inspect the jewellery, and confirm the connection remains seated.
CHECK SWELLING / FIT
Watch the swelling — check whether the post is becoming too short or tight.
CONTACT TRIBAL IF SOMETHING CHANGED
Contact Tribal if swelling is affecting jewellery fit.
Tribal may sometimes temporarily UPSIZE jewellery when swelling requires more room; after swelling settles, the piercing may later be reassessed and downsized. For a significant impact, ONE ADDITIONAL gentle HOCl cleaning can be appropriate — this does not change the normal routine to three cleanings every day. Read the full impact guide
CLEAN COLD COMPRESS
A cold compress can be used for swelling when appropriate. Cross-contamination still matters: do not place an old frozen food bag or other dirty freezer object directly against a fresh piercing — use a clean protective barrier.
My child’s earring fell out
DO NOT FORCE IT BACK IN.
If it does not slide in easily: STOP. Do not push harder, do not poke around, do not search for the channel, and do not force jewellery through resistance. Young piercing channels can contract quickly, and successful reinsertion cannot be guaranteed.
- 1Put the jewellery into a clean bag or container.
- 2Contact or book Tribal Expression for reinsertion.
- 3Bring the jewellery with you.
Young piercing channels can contract quickly, and successful reinsertion cannot be guaranteed. Read the full guide.
Chapter 6 · Jewellery & healing
Jewellery & Healing
Healed, comfortable, wearing Calgary-made jewellery

Healed, comfortable lobes wearing jewellery made in our Calgary workshop — every ear heals at its own pace. Examples are educational; jewellery fit should be assessed for the individual piercing.

YOUR JEWELLERY MAY LOOK LONGER AFTER THE SWELLING GOES DOWN
It is common to notice more of the post several weeks after a piercing — not because the jewellery has become longer, but because the ear has become less swollen. When extra length starts to look or feel unnecessary, that is exactly when a professional downsize assessment is useful. Is the post starting to look long? Learn why downsizing matters.
THE FIRST JEWELLERY CHANGE
There is no single “six weeks” answer — healing stages matter, and feeling healed does not automatically mean ready to change or ready to leave jewellery out. If the family is uncertain, bring the child and the jewellery being considered to Tribal Expression: a piercer can assess healing, material, style, weight, post length, backing and suitability. A piercing may be ready for an appropriate jewellery exchange without being ready to remain empty. Read the second-earrings guide.
GENTLY PRESS TOGETHER
Threadless jewellery works through a push-pin / tension connection — with freshly cleaned hands, gently check or pinch the front and back together so the end stays fully seated.
DO NOT TWIST TO TIGHTEN
Do not twist threadless ends to tighten them. This is an occasional monthly security check — not daily fiddling.
Chapter 7 · Why we use it
Why Tribal Expression Uses PureCleanse™

PURECLEANSE™
Hypochlorous-acid antimicrobial wound solution
Tribal Expression uses PureCleanse™, a pure and stable hypochlorous-acid antimicrobial wound-cleansing solution manufactured in Canada by Biomiq.
Hypochlorous acid is commonly shortened to HOCl. According to PureCleanse’s manufacturer, HOCl is also a molecule naturally produced by the body’s white blood cells as part of the response to injury or infection.
- HOCl antimicrobial wound cleansing
- No-rinse manufacturer positioning
- Tissue-compatible / non-cytotoxic manufacturer positioning
- Canadian designed & manufactured
- Biofilm-related manufacturer testing
Why we choose it
PureCleanse’s manufacturer describes the solution as non-cytotoxic, non-sensitizing, non-irritating and tissue compatible, while providing broad-spectrum antimicrobial wound cleansing. For Tribal Expression, this makes it a strong fit for the gentle, consistent aftercare philosophy we use for healing piercings.
Our goal is not to repeatedly attack healing tissue with harsh chemicals — the goal is to maintain a clean, calm environment that may support favourable healing. PureCleanse supplements our cleaning protocol; it does not change it.
Canadian made — on purpose
PureCleanse is a Canadian product. Biomiq, its manufacturer, prominently describes it as made in Canada, for Canada — a Canadian-designed and manufactured solution. That matters to us, because it is exactly how Tribal Expression works too: every piece of jewellery we pierce with is made locally in Calgary, by the same family business you are trusting with your child’s ears.
Supporting local and Canadian isn’t a marketing line for us — it is how we keep quality accountable. When your aftercare solution is made in Canada and your jewellery is made down the road by the people who pierce with it, you know exactly what is going into a healing ear and exactly who stands behind it. Choosing local keeps skilled work, fair standards and real accountability in our own community.
PureCleanse and sterile saline
Sterile saline remains a useful cleansing and irrigation solution — its primary role is mechanical rinsing and cleansing, and families using proper sterile saline have done nothing harmful. PureCleanse is the Tribal Expression preferred aftercare solution because its manufacturer positions it as an antimicrobial wound cleanser with additional properties beyond simple mechanical rinsing. Read the saline guide.

Products We Do Not Recommend
RUBBING ALCOHOL
No for routine healing aftercare. Alcohol may be an effective antiseptic, but effective germ killing does not automatically make something appropriate for repeated use on healing tissue — it can be harsh and irritating. Read more
HYDROGEN PEROXIDE
No for routine prolonged aftercare — it can be cytotoxic and irritating to healing cells. Read more
POLYSPORIN / ANTIBIOTIC OINTMENTS
Not routine aftercare for an uncomplicated piercing unless directed by an appropriate healthcare professional. Ointments are occlusive, not part of Tribal’s normal protocol, and some topical antibiotic ingredients can cause irritation or contact sensitivity. Read more
TEA TREE OIL
No. Possible irritation, dryness, burning and contact sensitivity. Read more
HOMEMADE SALT WATER
Not recommended. Home formulation risks incorrect concentration (too much salt or too little), contaminated water, contaminated containers, nonsterile preparation, inaccurate measuring, irritation and drying. The simple principle: do not perform “home chemistry” on a fresh piercing when properly manufactured aftercare is available. Sea-salt soaking is not Tribal Expression’s primary aftercare. Read more

APIERCING BUMP
A bump does not automatically mean keloid.
Common piercing variables Tribal may assess include sleeping pressure, jewellery fit, excessive length, tightness, movement, snagging, impact, aftercare, over-cleaning, healing debris, material sensitivity, nickel exposure and touching. We do not diagnose online.
READ MOREBPOSSIBLE INFECTION
We do not attempt to diagnose infection through the website.
If a parent suspects infection, contact Tribal Expression and get appropriate medical care when indicated. We do not automatically instruct parents to remove jewellery: if true infection is present, removing jewellery can sometimes allow the surface openings to begin closing while a deeper issue remains. If a physician directs removal, follow the physician’s medical advice.
