Can Sunscreen, Makeup or Skincare Get on a New Piercing?
The short answer
Keep personal-care products off the fresh piercing whenever practical during initial healing — sunscreen, makeup, foundation, moisturizer, face creams, acne products, hairspray, styling products and fragrance. Healing tissue may be more easily irritated, and personal-care products are not intended to sit inside a fresh piercing. If accidental exposure happens, gently rinse or clean as normal rather than scrubbing.
Keep everyday products away from the healing channel — and treat accidental exposure with a gentle rinse, not a scrub.
For parents
A healing channel is a small, new opening — and everyday personal-care products are formulated for skin, not for sitting inside one. Healing tissue may also be more easily irritated than mature skin. That combination is the whole rule.
What to keep away during initial healing
- Sunscreen
- Makeup, foundation and powders
- Moisturizers and face creams
- Acne products
- Hairspray and styling products
- Fragrance and perfume
If accidental exposure happens
Do not panic and do not scrub. Gently rinse or clean the area as part of the normal aftercare routine — the ordinary cleaning already removes surface residue.
What not to do
- Do not aggressively scrub the area after exposure.
- Do not add extra cleanings beyond the normal routine for a small amount of product contact.
