How Does Threadless Piercing Jewelry Work?
The short answer
Threadless jewelry uses a push-pin tension connection: the post contains a small opening, and the decorative front contains a thin pin given a slight controlled bend. When the pin is inserted into the post, that controlled bend creates tension that holds the front securely in place. Threadless jewelry does not tighten like a screw — never twist it. Once per month, with freshly cleaned hands, gently check that the front and back remain fully seated.
Push-pin tension, not threads: how threadless jewelry holds together — and the monthly security check.
For parents
The earrings Tribal uses for children’s initial piercings have no screw threads and no butterfly backs. They hold together by a clever, precise piece of engineering.
How the connection works
- The post contains a small opening.
- The decorative front contains a thin pin.
- That pin is given a slight controlled bend.
- When inserted into the post, the controlled bend creates tension.
- That tension holds the front securely in place.
What not to do
Do not twist threadless jewelry to tighten it. Threadless jewelry does not tighten like a screw — twisting works against the design and counts as the kind of fiddling we ask families to avoid.
The monthly security check
Approximately once per month, with freshly cleaned hands, gently pinch the front and back together to make sure the threadless end remains fully seated. This is an occasional security check — it is not daily fiddling, daily twisting, or repeated manipulation.
For threaded jewelry (on any older or non-Tribal pieces), the equivalent check is confirming the threaded end remains properly seated and secure.
Why Tribal uses this system
No external threads to scratch, a smooth front that sits flush, and a secure connection that survives day-to-day life on a child.
