What “implant-grade” means

It means the material is of the class used inside the body in medicine — smooth, stable, and without plating that can flake into a healing piercing. A healing lobe is an open wound with a decoration; it deserves the same material standard. Anything plated, bargain-priced or “just for the first month” is a false economy your child’s skin pays for.

Studs, not hoops

First piercings need jewellery that holds still: a stud with a smooth front and a flat, secure back. Hoops rotate and swing, and movement is what turns a healing lobe into a sore one.

Closures that stay put

A first earring’s job is to stay exactly where it was placed. Secure closures mean no daily twisting, no loosening, no lost studs at school — and a lobe that is never irritated by a wobbling back.

Why is the first post a little longer?

When an ear is first pierced, we intentionally leave a little extra room on the post. That is not because the jewelry was fitted incorrectly: freshly pierced tissue can swell, so the initial jewelry needs enough space to accommodate that normal early swelling without placing unnecessary pressure on the ear. Depending on the ear and the jewelry being used, approximately 1–2 mm of additional post length may be visible — and that little bit of extra room has an important job. It gives the freshly pierced ear space while swelling develops and then settles.

Fresh piercings need room for swelling. After swelling settles, professionally downsized jewellery can provide a closer fit with less excess movement.

After the swelling settles, a professional downsize can replace the longer post with a shorter, properly fitted one — often while keeping the same decorative front.
