When Should We See a Doctor About My Child’s Ear Piercing?
The short answer
Tribal Expression helps with jewellery, aftercare and piercing concerns — but the studio is not a substitute for medical assessment. Seek medical care promptly if the ear shows a worsening pattern: spreading redness, significant swelling, unusual discharge or pus, fever, or severe or increasing pain. A physician who directs jewellery removal always outranks studio guidance — follow the physician and keep the studio informed.
What Tribal can help with, what requires a doctor, and the red-flag pattern that means "go now, not tomorrow."
For parents
Tribal Expression is here for jewellery fit, aftercare guidance, reassessment and honest advice. What the studio cannot do is diagnose or treat medical problems. This page draws that line clearly.
What Tribal CAN help with
- Checking whether a piercing looks like normal healing
- Jewellery fit, seating, upsizing and downsizing
- Aftercare routine and product questions
- Reassessing jewellery when a physician agrees it should stay out
- Helping you decide whether a medical visit is warranted
What Tribal CANNOT do
- Diagnose an infection
- Prescribe or provide treatment
- Provide medical care of any kind
Red flags: seek medical care promptly
- Redness that is spreading beyond the piercing
- Significant or increasing swelling
- Unusual discharge or pus
- Fever
- Severe or increasing pain
- The jewellery embedding into the skin
Watch the pattern, not one symptom on one day: a piercing that is getting worse over time — redder, more swollen, more painful — needs medical eyes on it.
The physician override rule
If a physician directs jewellery removal or any other treatment, follow the physician’s direction — it outranks studio guidance. Keep Tribal informed so we can help with safe jewellery removal and later reassessment.
When in doubt
Contact the studio first for jewellery and aftercare concerns, and a medical professional whenever you are concerned about infection or health. Consultations are free, seven days a week.
