Why Does Tribal Expression Prefer ASTM F136 Titanium?
The short answer
Tribal Expression’s preferred titanium is ASTM F136 implant-grade titanium. The word “titanium” on a package is not enough — different titanium grades can look similar, polish similarly, and anodize similarly, and a parent cannot reliably determine implant-quality material by looking. Tribal requires reputable sourcing, material traceability, recognized standards, appropriate documentation, and mill certificates. Nickel is not intentionally used as an alloying element in ASTM F136 titanium, which is strongly preferred where nickel sensitivity is a concern.
F136, mill certificates, and traceability: why the word “titanium” on the package proves nothing.
For parents
This page explains exactly which titanium Tribal puts in children’s ears — and why the word on the package is not the point.
The specification
Tribal Expression’s preferred titanium is ASTM F136 implant-grade titanium — a recognized standard for implant materials.
Why the word “titanium” is not enough
- Different titanium grades can look similar.
- Different grades polish similarly and anodize similarly.
- A parent cannot reliably determine implant-quality material simply by looking at the jewelry.
What Tribal wants instead
- Reputable sourcing
- Material traceability
- Recognized standards
- Appropriate documentation
- Mill certificates / material certificates — the manufacturer’s own documentation of what the batch of metal actually is
A mill certificate is what turns “trust us, it’s titanium” into a traceable, documented material chain from mill to ear.
Why Keith strongly prefers titanium
- It is lightweight.
- High-quality titanium jewelry creates relatively little weight load on healing tissue.
- It is an excellent option where nickel sensitivity is a concern.
The accurate material claims
- Nickel is not intentionally used as an alloying element in ASTM F136 titanium — and titanium is strongly preferred where nickel sensitivity is a concern.
- Tribal Expression specifically chooses documented ASTM F136 as its preferred titanium standard.
