Should Both of My Child’s Ears Be Pierced During the Same Appointment?

The short answer

Yes — Keith generally prefers both ears during the same appointment when the child wants both ears pierced. This does not mean simultaneously. One healing period is simpler for the whole family than two, because more total weeks managing a fresh piercing simply means more opportunities for real-life events to interfere. Child autonomy still overrides this preference: if the child stops after one ear, we stop.

One appointment, one healing period, one shared routine — when the child wants both.

For parents

Split the appointment across two days, or do both ears in one visit? Keith’s answer is consistent.

Keith generally prefers both ears during the same appointment

… when the child wants both ears pierced. This does not mean simultaneously — one ear, then the second, with the child’s full attention on each.

Why one healing period

If one ear is pierced and the family waits through the entire initial healing period before doing the second, the family starts another full initial aftercare cycle later. Keith prefers one shared aftercare and healing period. This simplifies:

  • Cleaning
  • Swimming restrictions
  • Sports planning
  • Sleeping precautions
  • Follow-up
  • Jewelry reassessment
  • Family routines

The honest reason

We do not claim a longer calendar time biologically causes failure. The accurate explanation: more total weeks managing a fresh piercing creates more opportunities for real-life events — swimming, vacation, sports, snags, missed cleaning, school activities, impacts — to interfere.

The override

Child autonomy still overrides this preference. If the child stops after one ear, we stop — and the family comes back when the child is ready, with no penalty.
