Sterility from Hello to Band-Aid: Through a Child’s Appointment

The short answer

A safe appointment keeps sterility intact at every step: the room is fully prepared before your child sits down, sealed pouches are opened in front of you, a fresh single-use needle is used for each ear, gloves go on last, and the jewellery is sterile at insertion — with the aftercare talk finishing the job.

From the prepared room to the aftercare instructions, sterility is a thread through the whole appointment — and every step of it is visible if you know what to watch.

Before your child sits down

Sterility starts before the child is part of the equation. The room is prepared, surfaces are covered, the sealed instrument pouches and the sterile jewellery are already laid out, and the needle packages wait sealed. When your child is invited into the room, the setup is complete — nothing unsterile needs to be touched once the piercing begins.

The thread continues

  • Marks first. The dots are drawn and checked by your child in the mirror — before any sterile packaging is opened.
  • Opening in view. Pouches and the needle packet are opened in front of you.
  • Gloves last. Fresh gloves go on immediately before the piercing.
  • One ear, one needle. A fresh single-use needle for the second ear, with a glove change.
  • Sterile jewellery. The earrings — sterile for the appointment — are inserted immediately after each needle.
  • Immediate disposal. Used needles go straight into the sharps container.

After the piercing

The appointment ends with the aftercare talk: how to clean the piercings, what to expect during healing, and when to reach out. That conversation is part of the safety story — the studio’s care continues after the jewellery is in.
