How Titanium Gets Its Colour: Anodizing Explained

The short answer

Titanium earrings are coloured by anodizing: electricity grows a thin, transparent oxide layer on the metal, and light reflecting off that layer interferes with itself to produce colour. Nothing is painted or plated on — so the colour cannot flake off, and the skin-safe titanium surface remains the surface.

Anodized titanium colour comes from light on a controlled oxide layer — no dyes, no coatings, nothing that can flake off into a healing piercing.

Colour without dye

It surprises many parents: the rainbow of colours on quality titanium earrings comes from electricity and light, not paint. Titanium naturally carries a very thin, transparent oxide layer. In anodizing, an electric current grows that layer to a precise, tiny thickness — and as light bounces off the top and bottom of the layer, the reflections interfere with each other. Different thicknesses produce different colours, the same physics that puts rainbow colours on a soap bubble.

Why anodizing suits healing skin

  • Nothing added. The colour is the metal’s own oxide layer — no dye, no plating, no coating to wear off or flake into a piercing.
  • The surface stays titanium. What touches the skin is still the skin-safe, implant-grade material — see why implant-grade titanium.
  • Colour stability. Because the layer is part of the metal, the colour does not wash off with normal cleaning.

A note on colour and quality

Anodizing is also a useful honesty test: it only works properly on high-purity titanium, which is one more reason it appears on professional pieces rather than costume jewellery. See how the pieces are made in how body jewellery is made, or return to the jewellery guide.
