Feeling Nervous Is Allowed

The short answer

Nervous means your brain is getting you ready — and you still get to go at your own speed.

A kid's guide to the butterflies: why nerves show up, what actually helps, and how you stay in charge of them.

Everyone feels it

Grown-ups feel it too — before big moments, almost everyone gets butterflies. It does not mean you are a baby or that you cannot do it. It means something new is happening.

Tell someone

Tell me, and tell your grown-up. Saying "I am nervous" out loud makes it smaller. We can go slower, explain more, or just chat for a while.

Your helpers

  • Slow breaths — in through your nose, out through your mouth, a few times
  • Squeeze your grown-up's hand
  • Count backwards from ten with me
  • Ask every question you have — questions shrink fear

You can change your mind

Being nervous and not wanting to do it are two different things — and only you know which one you feel. If it is the second one, we stop, with zero fuss. See Yes, Pause, Stop — those words work every single time. And if you want to see how simple the whole thing is, start at What Happens.

When you know the three magic words, nerves get a lot smaller. Have a look.
